   the nissan xterra for everything except off roading, much more fun to drive and an all around good everyday driver! also it is alot newer so probably less maintainance, and since it is not american it wont break down alot

   I say Tahoe. Chevys are known to be reliable and the "z71" means its a 4×4. As for gas mileage I'm not sure but for off road handling neither of there are specifically made for off roading but adding upgrades such as shocks and other suspension parts can make both better for off roading. If your looking for a vehicle made for off roading then I would look at Jeeps.

   The Xterra is generally the better vehicle, but the 05 model is the exception.
   It was the first year of a major design and engine overhaul and the reliability on that model year is absolutely terrible.

   Get an 06 Xterra and you are good to go.
